Bob Marley évoque souvent la « fumette », les locks et le reggae. En somme, une sorte d’idéaliste hippie un brin utopiste...

L'utopie et l'idéalisme sont deux des mamelles de l'engagement.

Dans nos années collège, mon frère Mathias, qui avait le "Best of", l'a beaucoup plus écouté que moi... Il est parti sur ses traces, en Jamaïque, durant l'été 2000, pendant que je me rendais au Burkina Faso sur la tombe de Thomas Sankara.

Mystique, n'ignorant rien des réalités sociales, Bob Marley qui fonde avec ses camarades The Wailers (« les geignards » en anglais), est devenu dans le monde l’emblème de son île, jusqu’à ce moment historique, en 1978, où il donne le One Love Peace Concert à Kingston devant plusieurs dizaines de milliers de personnes, et fait monter sur scène les deux rivaux politiques, le premier ministre socialiste de l'époque, Michael Manley et Edward Seaga,  son successeur libéral, pour une poignée de main symbolique.

Son titre, "War", reprend le discours prononcé par Haile Sélassié, l'empereur éthiopien, devant la société des nations en 1936, pour dénoncer l'invasion de Mussolini, et l'inutilité de la S.D.N., dont les états membres n'ont pas réagi. Quatre-vingt quatre ans plus tard, le même discours est toujours valable.

"Get Up, Stand Up", écrite avec Peter Tosh, sortie sur l’album « Burnin' » des Wailers en 1973, est un hymne anti-raciste dénonçant les persécutions subies par les minorités ethniques en Afrique. Elle a été reprise par Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper, Tiken Jah Fakoly et... Arno.
